    • Obituary: 23 Oct 1952, The Kingaroy Herald, Queensland; Obituary MR.HERMAN OLSSON. A widely and highly respected gentleman of Kingaroy and district, a shire councillor for some years, and a familiar figure on racecourses throughout the area some years ago, stamped Herman Olsson, 76, who passed away in the Kingaroy District Hospital last Thursday night, as a pioneer who will long be remembered. Among the original pioneers of Taabinga Village ? he was a mentioned in district history in the publication "Wilderness to Wealth"?Mrt Olsson spent most of his life at Taabinga Village and on the grazing holding he acquired 40 years ago "Wooden Hut" at Reedy Creek. Herman Olsson was not only imbued with the spirit which urged him to help his fellow man as much as possible, but was noted also for his indefatigable public spirit. His integrity came to be known through his drive as a councillor, a hospital committee member, a member of the Masonic fraternity, and a stalwart for the first Taabinga Village school, while his vigorous interest in the "Sport of Kings" uncovered sterling qualities. Deceased gentleman was born in Kaastianstadt, Sweden. At the age of 14 he came to Australia with his mother to join his father, Mr Ola Akesson, who had emigrated from his home land two years previously, and began working at Laidley. Later, the family sought pastures anew, and in 1892, arrived at Taabinga Village, close on the heels of the late Mr George Warren, who had, in 1889, become the first pioneer of that district. Herman's father was a keen showman, and in the very early year of 1908, faced the manifold difficulties of the long trip to the Sydney Show, there to win many prizes with his ponies. In that year, too, a water shortage assailed the pioneers, and the building of the Taabinga Village dam was begun. Young Olsson pulled his weight with the hardy pioneers of his day, and became a man of self-reliance and ingenuity. Early in the 1900?s he was instrumental in erecting the old Greystonlea cattle yards. A jogging of his memory in recent years would have brought to light a memory of the early days at Taabinga. Kingaroy was non-existent then, and the work of building the village in full swing. Herman's father built the Grand Hotel, and was licencee of the establishment for 10 years. This building was later burned down when in the possession of M.r and Mrs. H King.It would recall the purchase by Mr. Akesson of the Taabinga Hotel built by Mr. George Warren in 1904, its subsequent burning, and a shifting of the licence to a new hotel, the Broadway, at the Nanango turn-off on the Village road. This later was shifted to its present Kingaroy site. In 1910, Herman Olsson came into possession of his "Wooden Hut" property. In the racing fraternities of the district on the Taabinga Village, Kumbia and Nanango courses, he and his horses became by words in connection with racing. Remembered are some of his string, "Lord Glenrock", "Prince Manlin", "Wee Bill", "Sansmond", which made names for themselves in the years following the Great War. In Taabinga Village school history the name of Herman Olsson is a by word. A past secretary, he was the last member of the first school committee, which included the late Messrs. C. Madsen, T. C. Nielsen, and H. Poulsen. The teacher at the time was Miss Albion, who is the present Mrs. Seeley of Yarraman. At the grand Jubilee celebrations of that mellow old school, Herman Olsson was cornered and asked to talk about some of the old-timers of his day. He described hoe thethe Gertiz, built the old bridge over the Meandu Creek on the Kingaroy-Nanango road; how a huge bark house built by Jim Cooley?s father opposite the school; and then mentioned, the Reens, Sven Johnson and the Lyons family. The old school was the community centre for social, political, church, and other gatherings. It became the hub of the solidarity of the district, and as the population grew, the school roll soared, until the Department elected to erect the new building. Mr. Olsson was a member of the committee of the old Kingaroy General Hospital on Hospital Hill, and conducted very ably the affairs with which he was entrusted. He will occasion long memory as a member of the Kingaroy Shire Council. A No 1 division councillor, he held the position from May 1939 until April 1946, employing for the good of the people of his division the steadfast and dauntless manner which marked him as an Australian pioneer. On July 1, 1932, fate struck a cruel blow in the untimely death of his wife. Mrs Olsson, who was Elfriede Ethel Boge, was a member of a family whose name also is steeped in pioneer-lore. Their residence at the Village dates from 1902, when they came from Maryborough. Elfriede married Herman in 1903, and they lived at the Village until 1911, when they are the family moved to "Wooden Hut". A believer in a life of vim and vigour, Mr. Olsson was active up until almost the very last, running his grazing property with all the activity such a task demanded. The flame of his public spirit still shining with as burnished a glow as ever, he carried the patronship of the Kingaroy Diggers Race Club, which was alive until about four years ago. As so, until the news of the severance with life of another of the fast dwindling number of remaining pioneers, last Thursday morning, October 16th, 1952 The huge assemblage at St Michael and All Angels' Church, Kingaroy, on Saturday, paid parting respects to a pioneer and a friend; and after the service it was fitting that the cortege should move towards the direction of Taabinga Village, through Pioneer Avenue, and the remains be laid to rest in the Taabinga Cemetery. Surviving to mourn their great loss are sons Percy ("Wooden Hut"), Arnold (Brisbane), Leonard (Bunya Mts) and Eaton (Brisbane); and daughters Rita (Mrs Lloyd Murray, Kingaroy), Jean (Mrs A.E. Fletcher, "The Springs", Gayndah). There are eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Another son, Harold Vivien Egbert, died while a member of the armed forces in 1940. Mrs. J. Robinson, Sydney (formerly Hannah Akesson) is a sister. The Funeral service was conducted by Rev. R. A. Foote, and also the burial rites. The gentlemen who headed the poll, Mr. Marcus Boge, is an old and respectcd resident of Maryborough, a thriving man of business, and possessing great influence with the Germans, his fellow country men, who constitute a very large portion of the voting power of Maryborough. Beyond the ranks of the Germans, however, Mr. Boge's candidature has been well received, and there is no reason to doubt that he will do credit to the new position in which he is placed and manfully combat the difficulties which surround the Council. • Personal: 22 Aug 1884, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser; That the Government intend to carry out their threat of flooding the country with cheaply indented European labor as a set off against the effect of the choking off colored labor, becomes more apparent day after day. A report was current in town yesterday that Mr. Marcus Boge, who lately parted with his Aurora plantation to Mr. Hall, is to be appointed an immigration agent and lecturer in Germany, and that he will shortly visit his fatherland on behalf of the Queensland Government to induce his countrymen to sign an agreement to work out here on plantations and elsewhere for a stipulated number of years, and at a figure which we presume can hardly, to really act as a set off against black labor, be over 10s, a week. Of Mr. Boge?s personal fitness for the post there will be no question, the high esteem he has won as a successful colonist being a sufficient guarantee to his countrymen on the other side of the water as to what can be done in this country by steadiness combined with energy. Though it has been treated as rather a joke and stated that Bismarck will ?run in?' our lecturers on arrival, it is not at all certain that the wily old statesman will welcome a number of persons to Germany, whose avowed object is to carry off as many of the pick of the nation as possible. • Obituary: 5 Aug 1902, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland; We regret to record the death of our old townsman, Mr. Marcus Boge, who, until shortly before his death and for some years past had been lessee of the Club Hotel, but at the time of his death he was completing arrangements to open a boot store at Taabinga, in the Nanango district, wither his wife and most of the members of his family had gone. Though he had not been in good health lately, his death was very sudden and unexpected. Mr. Marcus Boge was born in Schleswig-Holstein in 1851, and he came out to Maryborough as a young man, and his early life was devoted to farming and sugar growing on the Mary river. He afterwards started business in town in the boot trade which he conducted for many years, singly or in partnership with others. Up to within the last ten years, Mr. Boge had taken an active interest in local affairs, and was an alderman for several years. He leaves a wife and large family to mourn his loss. The deceased was a brother of Messrs. Hans and Joachim Boge of this town. The funeral takes place this afternoon. • Personal: 28 Jun 1948, Maryborough Chronicle, Queensland; MEMORIES OF A PIONEER (Bv Jos. Gehrmann) He was not a pioneer in the sense that he blazed tracks through the bush, but he made many boots and shoes that were worn by pioneers , and their wives and daughters. . Harry Gehrmann was about six years of age when his parents arrived in Queensland from across the "big pond" from Germany. What education Harry got came from the old primary school, at the corner of Alice and Lennox-streets. The school building later became an immigration depot, and the Naval Brigade had a drill hall on the same site. Harry served his apprenticeship as bootmaker under his uncle, the late Mr. Marcus Boge, who, in partnership with Mr. David Gardiner, carried on their business in the two-storied shop in Ellena-street, opposite Mr.Hughie Shaw's black smiths shop. At that time, Friday afternoon closing obtained, and the shops were open on Saturdays until 9 p.m., and Harry was called upon to deliver parcels on Saturday nights on which messages often accompanied him. 1 often had the wind up about the blacks when we were called upon to go to the far side o£ Newtown. By the way, people at that time used to refer to "over the creek." By "over the creek" was meant the gully along which trains now go to the wharves though the gully at that time was more like a creek than now. And people used to refer to "Irish,-town"- this because there were a goodly number of Irish people who lived close to each other in a part of "over the creek" or Newtown. I wish to refer here to the late Mr. Boge, who was a born gentleman, and a popular man in the Masonic Order. He married into a pioneering family, the Bundesens, of Netherby, and Mrs. Boge, as I remember her, was a real lady, always glad to give assistance where needed. Mr. Boge's business partner, Mr. Gardiner, had been, I think, actively connected with the School Of Arts. However, in the course of time, the firm of Boge and Gadiner dissolved partnership by mutual agreement, and Mr. Gardiner went to New Zealand. Mr. Boge bought a sugar plantation at Owanyilla, known as Aurora plantation. He soon struck trouble here, for he maintained that sugar could be grown with white labour. Sugar growers along the Mary River, at that time, used to crush their own cane, and send, the juice to the refinery at Yengarie in punts. And Mr. Boge was advised that if he did away with his Kanaka labour, the refinery would not take his juice, so Mr. Boge had no option. Harry was a versatile leather worker. In those days, cricket balls were not as plentiful as now, and when the covers had been knocked from them, they were sent to Harry Gehrmann to be re-covered. Harry had a design of his own for re-covering, but want of space precludes a description of that design at this juncture, These reconditioned cricket balls made splendid practice balls for a batsman had to watch them all the way- those cricket balls could do things. I will continue the story of this pioneer's early career in a later issue of your journal. Maryborough Chronicle, Queensland, Monday, 28 June 1948 Aurora Plantation 1883 Marcus Boge bought 81 hectares fronting hte Mary near Etchell's Falls from WG Bailey. He felled the scrub and in a short time had cane growing. He bought a mill in May 1883. Miss Boge ceremonially started the engine. 1884 Boge sold to Richard Henry Maund Hall. Hall was a pioneer in many areas and was one of the first farmers to irrigate out of the Mary. He also converted megass to manure by feeding the cattle on it nightly. He employed 2 Europeans and 14 Islanders plus an extra 10 hands in the crushing when he handled neighbours cane as well. 1886, 21st April The Aurora Plantation is being successfully irrigated by pumping from the Mary River, The results so far are exceedingly satisfactory. 1890 Aurora lost much of its cane in the flood and the nearby Pioneers Rest school was carried 400m down river and turned upside down by flood waters. The mill escaped damage and was turned into a temporary school. 1893 Plans were revealed for expansion after the mill had survived the flood. 1895 Saturday 25 May 1895

    Note for Kaltenkirchen
Kaltenkirchen (nicknamed KaKi) is a town located on the outskirts of Hamburg in Germany. It is part of the Segeberg District, in Schleswig-Holstein. It has about 20,000 inhabitants. First mentioned in the 14th century, it flourished during the Industrial Revolution to accommodate the large number of workers in Hamburg. During the World War 11 a temporary airfield protected the northern towns from bombing raids, but during the raids on Hamburg the airfield was destroyed and never rebuilt. Only open fields now remain where it was. A concentration camp was established here from August 1944 to April 1945 as a subcamp to the Neuengamme concertration camp. About 700 prisoners died. There was talk of moving the Hamburg Airport to Kaltenkirchen in the 1970s, but this did not materialise [Source: Wikipedia]

Johnson, "The Grange", Burnett Heads, on Thursday, took place on Saturday from the Church of England for interment in the general cemetery. The deceased lady, who lived in Maryborough for 60 years, had lately been living at Kingaroy, and recently she came to Bundaberg to spend a holiday with her daughter, Mrs R. Johnson, The late Mrs Boge was well known in Maryborough where she lived practically the whole of her life, and where her husband predeceased her some years ago. She is survived by an adult family. • Obituary: 2 Nov 1937, The Kingaroy Herald, Queensland; The death of Mrs Anthilde Marie Christine Boge, widow of the late Mr Marcus Boge, took place in Bundaberg on Thursday last. This severed another link with the history of early Kingaroy, for she had resided in Taabinga village for 37 years. She had been in failing health for some months and shortly before her death had gone to reside with her daughter in Bundaberg. Mrs Boge was born in Schleswig-Holstein in 1856, and came to Australia with her parents in 1873, the family landing in Marborough. She married Mr Marcus Boge, who engaged in sugar planting at Catchell's Falls on the Mary River. Later they purchased a farm and erected a mill at Aurora Plantation and also helped to establish the Tiaro sawmills. Mr Boge was for many years a prominent citizen of Maryborough, and held many prominent positions and in all his undertakings, he had the help and encouragement of his wife. He also commenced a boot-making business in which he was very successful. It is recalled that Mrs Boge had the distinction of the first boat built by Walkers Limited of Maryborough. About 37 years ago they came to this district and selected land at Taabinga Village, where Mrs. Boge had resided ever since. Mr Boge died in Maryborough 35 years ago. The deceased lady was of a kindly and hospitable disposition, and endeared herself to all by her charity to others. She was an ardent member of the Church of England, and it was only recently that poor hearing prevented her from taking an active part in the services. The funeral took place in Bundaberg on Saturday. From "The Kingaroy Herald, Queensland," 2 November 1937

David Gardiner, carried on their business in the two-storied shop in Ellena-street, opposite Mr.Hughie Shaw?s black smiths shop. At that time, Friday afternoon closing obtained, and the shops were open on Saturdays until 9 p.m., and Harry was called upon to deliver parcels on Saturday nights on which messages often accompanied him. 1 often had the wind up about the blacks when we were called upon to go to the far side of Newtown. However, in the course of time, the firm of Boge and Gardiner dissolved partnership by mutual agreement, and Mr. Harry had a design of his own for re-covering, but want of space precludes a description of that design at this juncture, These reconditioned cricket balls made splendid practice balls for a batsman had to watch them all the way-those cricket balls could do things. I will continue the story of this pioneer's early career in a later issue of your journal. Maryborough Chronicle, Queensland, Monday, 28 June 1948

[Source: Palmer List of Merchant Vessels] Note for the PORT of BREMERHAVEN BREMERHAVEN is a Seaport town of Germany in the Free State of Breman, on the right Bank and Estuary of the Weser. The Maryborough Chronicle of the 6th instant reports that the German immigrant ship Humboldt left Hamburg on the 3rd of July, 1873, carrying 379 passengers including 118 children under 12 years of age of whom 18 were infants under 1 year. Soon after sailing, scarlantina appeared on board, but in consequence of the perfect isoation isolation of thoso affwsted, the desease was confined to a comparitavely small portion of the children. 18 of whom were affected -the last on the 4th of October.Three adults were also attacked. Among the numerous children whooping cough also broke out, about 30 of them were affected. Afterwards under the influence of cold weather in the southern latitudes, broncitis arose and carried off some of them. Near the conclusion of the voyage, survey appeared among the adults. this was the natural consequence of neglect of sufficient exercise, to which the women with large familiesare particularilr prone. Water and provisions were of the best quality. A condenser was on board the ship. the deaths on board included one adult female, after confinement: 7 infants under1 year: 9 children under 2 years, mostly of bronchitis: 6 children under 6 years. Apart from the few cases of scurvy already mentioned, the health of the adults was most excellent, no serious desease having occured among them. Eight children were born on board the ship, three of them during her anchorage at White Cliffs, Hervey's Bay, the health officer ordered her to undergo six days quarantine, there having been contagious desease on board. This time was spent in cleaning and boiling everything used by the passengers during the voyage, a practice which is to be commended for all immigrant ships, in order that every possibility of the germs of contagion or of infection being afterwards on land in clothes or bedding may be precluded. Kruså-Holdbi Kro In the middle of the beautiful scenery in the southern part of Jutland ? only three kilometers from the German border ? you will find a traditional Danish inn. It is the ?Holdbi Kro? near Kruså. Entering the premises, you instantly get the sensation that something special is awaiting you. In the early days, the building was commonly referred to as the Royal Privileged Holdbi Inn but, in 1981, the old buildings were taken over and renovated by A Hereford Beefstouw. The eldest son of the Damgaard family, architect Søren Damgaard, was in charge of the restoration. The cozy thatched house dates back to 1847 and the inn is rich with stories of its history. According to the A Hereford Beefstouw tradition, the restaurant houses several pieces of art. The walls are decorated with paintings by Henry Heerup, amongst others. A decanting machine holds a prominent position in the middle of the room and has become a natural part of the interior ? just like the classic grill, the salad bar and the solid wooden tables. The restaurant in Kruså has room for 56 dining guests and it is possible to arrange for larger parties in separate rooms connected to the restaurant. 28 May 1866; Aabenraa, Aabenraa County: Helene Marie Bundesen died in Aabenraa, Aabenraa County and was buried on 1 Jun. 1866: Age 4 years and 3 months. 5 May 1867; Styrtom, Ensted Parish, Aabenraa County; Birth of Peter Johan Bundesen and christening on 10 June 1867. • Drowning: 2 Mar 1887, Mary River; Queensland Police Gazette 1887 Name: Anton Emil Andreas, Labourer, age 24 Place of Death: Mary River Police District: Tiaro Supposed Cause of Death: Drowning Persons last seen in company of Deceased: P. A. Bundersen By whom reported: J. McKewan, J.P Inquest: yes TIARO (From our own Correspondent) March 1 Since Saturday morning the water has been gradually disappearing from the fertile banks of the river under cultivation, and the crops to a great extent are seen to be levelled and where the corn is left standing it is found to be quite spoilt, as in less than 24 hours the grains crack and commence growing. The houses that were submerged are in a most deplorable state, being covered with mud, and it is impossible at present to calculate the loss sustained by the farmers. A farmer at Gundiah, in describing his loss by the flood, states that not only was the corn ready to pick carried away by the waters and the winter crop completely spoiled, but the surface of the land, ploughed deep, was completely washed away, ruining the farm, and this is by no means an individual case. Considerable damage has been done to fencing, culverts and roads throughout the Tiaro Division; at Teebar and Clifton the damage to fences was great and the loss of stock not yet known, but several carcases of drowned horses have been found. The water in Teebar Creek was 6 feet higher than in the '75 flood, but happily only one life has been lost-namely, Anton Emill Anderson, nephew of the man Joaaeson who was drowned at Miva crossing about a month ago. Deceased was employed at Mr. Bundersen's farm as a labourer, and Mr. Bundersen, seeing a lot of cockatoos on a patch of corn left, high and dry by the flood, caught a horse with the intention of swimming a creek that intervened, in order to drive the cockatoos away. Anderson asked where he was going, and being told, said you are an old man, let me go, I am younger than you. After some persuasion, Buudersen consented, and Anderson rode into the creek, which was backed up by the flood waters; there was no current. After getting in a little way, both horse and man went under. The carcass of the horse was got about an hour after, but up to the present the body of the man is not recovered. The friends of the deceased and the police are making every effort to recover the body. Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland, Wednesday, 2 March 1887

    Notes:

    FLOOD NEWS.
    TIARO TO GOOTHIE.
    [FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRBSPONDENT.]
    Tiaro, February 16.
First it should be recorded that the three dairies have suspended operations owing to the impassable state of the road. A brisk demand for cheese has sprung up and is likely to continue for some time, which would enable the dairies here to extend operations, if only the weather changed. Most of the dairymen have had to turn their cows out, a serious lose to them when the cows shall again be needed.
Starting from the Tiaro Bridge on the eastern bank of the river the next farm claiming notice is Mr. Neilaman?s. His house is situated above flood mark, but like many others he was not so careful respecting his barn, but that was only 18 inches under water and his corn was placed up aloft. He, however, lost about 12 acres of growing maize.
The adjoining farm is owned and worked by Mr. Boi Jaoobsen, whose house was three feet under water, and his barn completely submerged, causing the destruction of 15 bags of maize, two bags of seed wheat, and one ton of potatoes. He also lost 15 acres of maize in the field and one acre of lucerne. Mr. Jacobean fortunately got his furniture safely carted into the town, where he and his family have sincs resided.
The lofty railway bridge crossing what is here known as Nash?s gully was fully two feet under water, a fact hard to realize when standing on Mr. Jacobsen?s land.
The farms of Messrs. Lawrence, Stevens and Barriskil, I shall report upon in my next, when taking the opposite bank, from which a fair view can only be obtained of the immense land slips which have occurred hereabouts and which are daily increasing.
The next farm has recently been leased to Mr. J. Cook, who has erected a substantial house upon it, which was just above flood level, but the family cleared to Tiaro for safety. He lost 60 acres of maize.
His neighbour, Mr. Cornwell, has his house and outbuildings erected on very high ground, but the waters came so near that Mr. Cornwell and his family cleared to a small dairy recently erected by him on a high and dry ridge on the road to Tiaro. No crops were lost here.
Mrs. Gilchrist, lost about 5 acres of maize, and like her next neighbour, Mrs. Gordon, had to turn out her dairy herd.
Mr. Gilchrist, jun., has lost about 5 acres of ripe maize and 4 acres of lucerne. His barn was flooded, destroying about 200 bushels of maize, but his hay in shed was above flood level. Fully 16 acres of low lying land has from one to two feet of sand washed on to it.
Adjoining this property is the tobacco farm occupied by Austin and Gilchrist, who have lost 31 acres of growing tobacco, which promised to give a heavy yield- a discouraging beginning for them.
Passing the uncultivated property known as Home Park, we come to a very low-lyiug farm occupied by Mr. W. Young, who bas necessarily suffered severely. The land is exceedingly rich, which may be accepted as an excuse for tbe great risk of working such low-lying land. Mr. Young's house was situated on high land away back in the forest, but his barn was 7 feet under water, causing the destruction of 70 bags of maize and all his harness. He also lost 9 acres of growing maize, 1 acre of lucerne, 10 pigs, over 100 fowls, 10 tons of hay in stack, and one tank.
Mr. George Jensen owns the next farm, and had his house slightly submerged, but his neighbour, Mr. Thompson, kindly came to the rescue with his dray and horses and took his goods to a place of safety. The barn was high and dry, enabling Jensen to save his dry corn and hay, but he lost 6 acres of growing maize, 2 acres of lucerne, and half an acre of tobacco.
Mr. Rasmussen?s house and barn are wisely built above even this flood level, and he was able to harbour his neighbour, Jensen and family, for three days. Mr. Rasmussen, however, lost 15 acres of maize and an acre of lucerne.
His neighbour, Mr. S. Thompson, had 2 feet of water in his house, but his barn was above flood mark. He lost 3 acres of green maize, and the fearful current hereabouts washed the soil off 6 acres of his land and left a deposit of 2 feet of sand on other 3 acres.
His brother, Mr. A. Thompson, had both his bouse and barn under water, but he cleared by boat on Friday night to Mr. Casey?s. He lost 600 bushels of maize and a ton of potatoes in his barn, and 11 acres of green corn.
Mr. Casey?s house and barn were high and dry, but he lost 3 acres of young maize.
Mr. Bundesen, senr., had his barn 2 feet under water, and he lost 6 tons of hay in stacks, 8 acres of growing maize, and 2 acres of lucerne.
Mr. Haden?s house was 11 feet under water, causing him to move to a new house a little higher on Friday, but next morning he and his large family had again to shift, this time to his barn, situated in safety on a high ridge. Mr. Haden lost 20 acres of maize, 2 acres of lucerne, half an acre of potatoes, and 6 tons of hay in stack.
Mr. Jeppesen, the well-known cigar maker and tobacco grower, next claims attention. His house was above flood level, but his barns were flooded, destroying seven bags of seed potatoes and half-a-ton of newly cut tobacco. He also lost 80 acres of growing maize, one acre of tobacco, and 1 acre of lucerne. The farms heree are on a rich alluvial flat, but dangerously low, hence as far as the eye can stretch the fields wear an aspect of utter desolution, every vestige of vegetation and every fence having disappeared.
Mr. Bundesen, Junr., had his house, barn and out buildings all under water, and had to clear to Jeppesen?s; his furniture bedding and clothing getting badly damaged, He lost 15 acres of standing maize, and a large quantity of seed wheat destroyed in his barn.
Mr. Sorensen?s house and barn were also flooded, severely damaging their contents. He lost 6 bags of seed wheat, 7 bags potatoes, 10 bags maize, 10 tons of hay and 15 acres of growing corn, and to complete his troubles had to clear hastily, with his family, to the school, where Mr. and Mrs, Wagner did all in their power to make them comfortable.
In trying to make my way to Mr. Wade?s, I should either have got drowned by taking the road, I was improperly advised to follow, or have been compelled to camp out all night in the rain, but, fortunately, just before darkness set in I met Mr. Wagner, who most generously turned back, and guided me over what is known as the Mountain road, a circuitous route, but which beaded many dangerous gullies, until after a long ride over boulders and through swamps we came in sight of Mr. Wade?s lights in the fine house he has recently erected, when Mr. Wagner bid me good-bye and wended his way home, leaving me his debtor for an act of generous kindness never to be forgotten. It need scarcely be added that I was most cordially entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Wade, who had just returned from Pialba, where they bad been on a visit during the worst of the flood, but returned to find their daughters safe at the bouse of Mr. Wagner, where their brothers had conveyed them when tbe flood got dangerously near the house. Mr. Wade?s house was only a foot above the higest level, and had it risen as much more would have placed his house in a dangerous position, quite isolated, and in a strong current. He has lost half ton of seed potatoes, 6 acres of maize, 20 tons of pumpkins, 1 acre lucerne, a ton of salt, 8 acres sets of harness, and about 160 choice fowls. He bad just broken up 4 aores of rich land from which the strong current has completely washed away the soil.

Boge, assisted by her daughters, who are, I understand, dressmakers. Mrs A. Boge is mother to Mrs H. Olssen of the same Village, and herself (Mrs A. Boge) is a daughter of Mrs P. A. Bundensen, also of Taabinga Village. The old lady, although 74 years of age and blessed with many children residing in or about Taabinga, prefers to live by herself without attendance, and thus keep her independence rather than to reside with any of her children, who would be only too glad to accept her in their own family. I found Mrs Bundensen (senr.) very active for her age and well capable to attend, not only to her household duties, but also to her flower and, I think, vegetable garden. Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland, Thursday, 1 October 1908 Bundesen is spelt Bundensen in the notice.
    • Personal: 25 Aug 1915, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland; JOHNSON.-JEPPESEN A wedding of more than usual interest was celebrated at St Paul's Church, Taabinga Village, on Wednesday last, the 18th August 1915, when Miss Catherine Margaret (Kate) Jeppesen, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs J. R. Jeppesen, of Coolabunia West, was married to Mr C. J. Johnson, third son of Mr and Mrs A. G. Johnson, of Eglington Station, Alexandria, Victoria. The bride was given away by her father, and attended by Miss Elsie Jeppesen, the chief bridesmaid, Miss Millie Jeppesen, the second bridesmaid, and Miss Essie Fisher, niece of the bride, was train bearer. Master Dess Jeppesen, nephew of the bride, had the important office of cushion-bearer. Mr C. Creighton, of Alexandria, Victoria, acted as best man, and Mr Albert Jeppesen as groomsman. A very interesting guest at the wedding was Mrs Peter Bundesen, senr., a sweet-faced old lady of 80 odd summers, still hale and sprightly, who sat beaming upon her many descendants who formed the major portion of the gathering. The bridal pair left Kingaroy by the evening train en route for Victoria, where the honeymoon will be spent.
