    • Running For Council: 18 Dec 1852, Brisbane, Stanley District; AT a Meeting of the Electors of the Stanley Boroughs, held on Thursday evening, the 16th inst., it was resolved, that in pursuance of the resolution of a Public Meeting, held in the Court House, Brisbane, Thursday, August 19, 1852. Moved by ARTHUR HODGSON, ESQ., J.P. Seconded by MR. POOLE. "That it is the opinion of this meeting, that no amount of representation of the inhabitants of these districts, in the Sydney Council, will be adequate to their requirements." And in order to carry out the spirit of this resolution, this meeting cordially approves of the nomination and election of Charles Windmill, of the Strangers' Home, Fortitude Valley, as being a fit and proper person to carry out the views embodied in the resolution of the Public Meeting referred to. ------------------------------------------- TO THE INDEPENDENT ELECTORS OF THE STANLEY BOROUGHS. GENTLEMEN, IN requesting me to come forward as a candidate, to represent you in the Legislative Council of New South Wales, you do me an honour which neither time nor circumstances shall ever erase from my memory. After due deliberation, I have come to the conclusion that it would bo impolitic in me, and, moreover, would be treating so many independent electors with too much disregard, were I too decline to co-operate with you in so great an undertaking. I therefore willingly avail myself of tho opportunity you now afford me, of briefly expressing my opinions : opinions founded on the necessity of the times, arising out of this enlightened age. I am an advocate for universal suffrage - vote by ballot - responsible government - a thorough education of the people, both young and old - for which purpose, large grants ought to be voted for the support of superior schools, and mechanics' institutes - a reduction in the price of'crown lands, and the appropriation of the revenue arising out of the same by the local government - immediate separation from New South Wales - and last, though not least, cheap bread for the poor. Should you succeed to return me as your representative, I shall advocate the foregoing policy, with all exertion, ability, and my entire influence. C. WINDMILL. --------------------------------------------- TO THE INDEPENDENT ELECTORS OF THE STANLEY BOROUGHS. VOTE FOR CHARLES WINDMILL, THE MAN OF THE PEOPLE. WHO "rose among you," has ever proved himself the determined foe of all classocracy, and zoology ; is ardently attached to popular institution, and who has pledged himself, if returned to Council, to move, as an amendment on every motion brought before the House, "that before entering on any other business, this House resolves to give Justice and immediate Separation to Moreton Bay." I will continue to correct the article in the future. WHEN WOOLLOONGABBA WAS WATTLE SCENTED FORGOTTEN CITY STREAMS. By "NUT QUAD." In this column a little while ago there was described a forgotten stream, which, in the middle of last century, entered the town at the site of the horse ferry in Creek-street, and, after passing through several city blocks, finally ended near the Town Hall reserve. This was sometimes called the "Big Creek," to distinguish it from a smaller one which joined the river near the present Port Office. This latter was called the "Little Creek,'' and crossed Edward-street just about where Fenwick's tallow warehouse now stands ; or, to be a little more precise, on the site of the lane between their wool exchange and the warehouse. In the mid-fifties of last century a 6-inch wooden plank placed across the creek served as a bridge to enable foot pas- sengers to pass along Edward-street. To safely cross this plank after dark required a certain amount of skill ; but in those days (long before the introduction into Brisbane of gas or kerosene) citizens whose duties took them into the street after nightfall carried a horn lantern, into which bad been inserted the homely tallow candle. Between Margaret-street , and Mary-street there were only four allotments on the southern front of Edward-street. Charles Windmell was the owner of the ground at the corner of the lastnamed streets and Edward-street, upon which now stands the store of the Australian Estates and Mortgage Company. A man named Towell owned the next piece, and then came Jerry Scanlan, the landlord of the Queensland Hotel. Fenwick's buildings stand on the land then owned by Scanlan and Towell. John M'Cabe was the owner of the block at the corner of Mary and Edward streets, upon which was afterwards erected Amos Braysher's Metropolitan Hotel (now the Savoy). Mr. Braysher had been chief steward of the Telegraph steamer when Captain O'Relliy was master. After leaving Edward-street the creek entered Towell's property, nrnd ran nearly parallel , to the. Edward-street front down to C Windmell's corner. Tho creek thus dlvlded Towell's land into two portions of unequal size, and to get into his dwelling he had to cross the creek-on a plank. The creek passed through several properties on the western side of Margaret street, and crossed, to the eastern side of the street Further correctons later. (Joanne)

McLachlan, M.L.A., who has been a member of the Brisbane City Council for about 5 or 6 years, was honoured at a special meeting of the Brisbane City Council yesterday. The report of the General Purposes Committee, which was adopted on the motion of Alderman W.R. Cramoton, seconded by Alderman R. Long, stated that consideration had been given to the desirableness of chang- ing the name of Windmell-street, with a view to recognising the services of one of the aldermanic representations of that district, who had been principally instru- mental in bringing about the great improvement which had been effected by the widening and opening out of that thoroughfare, and it was therefore recommended that Windmell-street be renamed "McLachlan-street." Chas. Windmell was a Hvewire in' Brisbane town of old. He took part in the public city life energetically. There is a re cord in an old Courier of his at tending a public meeting in tha Town Hall and moving the opposi tion so vigorously that he was ejected from the meeting. He owned large blocks of land along Anne Street, shown on the 1856 Brisbane plan, and one time ran the Melbourne Hotel, at the corner of Anne and Brunswick streets, now Anderson's corner which he owned.? A STORY OF A LEAPING COW.
Mr. Charles Windmell, of Fortitude Valley, sued Mr. Mellor for the sum of £10 for damages done to his potatoes, corn, and grape vines, growing at the "Valley." Mr. Windmell conducted his own case, and Mr. Rawlins appeared for the defendant. According to Mr. Windmell's statement the cow was a red one, was very often in his garden, and could take a leap over a seven feet fence, without any trouble. Night and day did this said leaping cow visit Mr. Windmell's garden ; and often did Mr. Windmell go to Mr. Mellor to present a' bill for damages. Four witnesses were called : by the names of Burnett, Voysey, Brookes, and Bulcock ; the last of these said the fence was not very high in one particular part ; while the previous witnesses had spoken as to the goodness and height of the fence. Mr. Voysey, when asked by Mr. Rawlins if a man could not easily stand one leg in the garden and the other in the road? replied, " he must have longer legs than I have." The evidence adduced in support of the case varied, inasmuch as Bulcock swore that the cow always went over a particular spot, while Windmell swore " she would take any part." ,Mr. Rawlins relied on the wordin_ of the " Impounding Act," as to " sufficient fencing," and said Mr. Windmell was not entitled to recover, as he had not erected a sufficient fence to keep cattle out. The Bench, believing that the part of the fence spoken of was lower than that sworn to, andFix this text disregarding the statement as to the nmount of damage inflicted, gave judgment for 40s.
