THE LATE MR. ALFRED COLLINS
Tlie following account of the death of Mr. Alfred Collins. brother of Mrs. Gillman, of Grahamstown, appeared in
" Young Chronicle" last week:- A staunch old gold miner, a fighter in the cause of labor movement, beloved of a very wide circle of friends and especially fond of children, keen and intelligent, that was Alfred Collins, who died on Wednesday at Burragong District Hospital. The late Mr. Collins .was born in Sydney, 80 years ago. His parents kept the well-known hostelry, the Duck and Drake, in George Street, Sydney-today known as the Great Southern Hotel. His father was also a teamster. As a young man the late Mr. Collins left Sydney for Victorian goldfields, which were the great attraction for all men in those days. While in Victoria he married Miss Annie Orr, at Wangaratta. The couple came to N.S.W. for the Adelong gold rush and they remained at Adelong and Grahamstown for 14 years. Most of their children were born in this district. Afterwards they came to Young and at the time of his death Mr. Collins had resided here for 44 years. Mrs. Collins predeceased her husband by 14 years. Among other things Mr. Collins was known as a great Labor enthusiast. During elections he was always one of the leading local exponents of the cause and his arguments were intelligent and convincing, so much so that his views were generally accepted on the important political question of the day. He was a man well spoken, and always popular, and very fond of children. Mr. Collins had been ailing for some years. He leaves six children; who are: Mrs. Mailer (Queensland), Mrs. F. Wheeler (Hurlstone Park), Mrs. G. Mann and Mrs. Stephen (Lilyfield), Bob and Albert (Young). There are 29 grandchildren and 15 great grand- children. Two brothers survive in New Zealand, and one sister, Mrs. Gillman, of Grahamstown, who recently visited her brother here. There was a large attendance at the funeral to the Young Cemetery, where he was laid to rest beside the remains of his deceased wife and son. The officiating, clergyman was Rev. Canon Howse.
