  1. 2.  Iver Christensen died 14 Mar 1892, Yangan, Queensland, Australia.

    Other Events:

    • Drowning: 15 Mar 1892, Warwick Argus, Queensland; THE CASE OF SUICIDE AT YANGAN. A MAGISTERIAL inquiry was held on the 8th instant, before Mr. June Kemp, J.P., into the death of Iver Christensen whose body was found In Swan Croak. A large number of witnesses wen examined, their evidence generally corroborating the following -. Mary Christensen deposed: I am the wife of Iver Christensen, deceased; Saw my husband last alive yesterday at 1 o?clock p.m., I had a conversation with him; he asked me for the powder and shot; gave them to him; he then went out and immediately came in again; he then said?My time is up, I will have to clear;? then asked if I had done him any harm; he replied ?No;? asked him again if I had ever don him any harm, as I wished my mother to hear it; he again answered ?No;? then asked mi if he could leave me and the children like that; he said ?Yes, I can Mary, there are plenty here to rear up the children for you;? he has frequently threatened to within the last twelve months to make away with himself ; on one occasion he was taking a rope with him, and I begged and prayed him to let me have the rope; he gave me the rope and said ?You can have it this time, but it will be some time;? have not seen my husband?s body since it was taken from the creek; my husband and I had no quarrel either yesterday or at any time; did not go to see my husband?s body on account of my delicate health, and the advice of my brother not to do so. Hans Jorgensen deposed I was well acquainted with the deceased Iver Christensen; have known him for the last 13 years; he was a shipmate of mine; the last time I saw him alive was last Sunday week; never heard him threatening to do away with himself at any time; at 5 o?clock I was informed by Christy Andersen and H. Henreksen that Iver Christensen had disappeared, and that he had threatened to take his life; they asked me to go with them to look for him;I consented; we then searched over the mountain and along the creek for two or three hours; at the end of that time a hat was discovered by H. Henreksen on the bank of the creek avout ten chains from Iver Christensen?s house; we then called all the searchers together, and we got some large poles and began sounding the bottom of the waterhole; I brought the body to the surface of the water, and immediately recognised it as being the body of Iver Christensen; saw the body stripped by the constable and examinated, but saw no marks of violence; there was no appearance of any struggle on the bank, which was very steep; the only marks on the bank showed that he seemed to have slipped into the water and been drowned; but not noticed anything peculiar about him lately; he always seemed in good spirits when I met him. Mr. James Kemp, J.P., stated: I was called on Tuesday by Andrew Anderson, who informed that his brother-in-law, Iver Christensen had left home the day before telling his wife that.he intended to take his life; immediately proceeded to Christensen?s house and found a number of men collected there; shortly after a man came running up from the creek and said there was a hat lying on the bank of the creek; went with others to the place indicated and found a pipe beside the hat; the waterhole appeared to be very deep; could not see any appearance of the body; some of the men present stripped and went into the water, but failed to reach the bottom ; then procured a long sapling, and after a few trials brought the body to the surface; when it was brought to the surface I immediately it as the body of Iver Christensen; immediately despatched a messenger to the Senior-sergeant of Police, and had the body removed to the house; a constable arrived on the spot at about 4 p.m., and examined the pockets of deceased?s clothing, finding a small piece of tobacco and a box of matches in the trousers pocket; also saw him examine the body when stripped, but saw no marks of violence of any description; deceased?s body was found on Tuesday morning , between 8 and 9 o?clock; I found that Mrs. Christensen had left home early in the morning, and had gone to stay with her sister over the creek; went over and to request her to come to identify the body, and to be present at the enquiry when the constable should arrive; this request affected her so much that I thought she would have had a fit, and as she seemed to be extremely weak I did not press the point; she told me she would never be able to stand the sight of her husband?s dead body; then left her, and went over to her own house to await the constable?s arrival; on the arrival of the constable, and after his instection of the body, we all proceeded to the house where Mrs. Christensen was, to hold the inquiery; the constable then urged her to come to identify the body, but she could hardly stand and had to be helped into the room by her brothers, we decided to take the evidence where she was; this was accordingly done, and the evidence of the others who had been engaged in the search, and who were present at the finding of the body was taken by me at the same time; am of the opinion that there had been no foul play in this case; during my first interview with Mrs. Christensen she informed that her husband had done no work for the past three weeks, and seemed to be despondant and strange in his manner; the body when removed from the water, was quite cold and stiff, and had every appearance of having been in the water for many hours; the hands were clasped together and held well out in front, as if deceased had deliberately dived from the edge of the bank; have no doubt whatsoever, that Iver Christensen commited sucide by drowning. The dispositions were ordered to be forwarded to the Attorney-General. Warwick Argus, Queensland, Tuesday 15 March 1892
