    25 Squadron RAAF

25 Squadron was first formed as 23 Squadron at Laverton in Victoria on 3 May 1937. It moved to Pearce in Western Australia on 1 January 1939 and was subsequently renamed. The outbreak of the Second World War involved the unit in convoy protection and anti-submarine patrols around Fremantle and Rottnest Island.

When Japan entered the war, the unit rearmed with Vultee Vengeance dive-bombers and Brewster Buffalo fighters, in anticipation of a Japanese invasion of the mainland. 25 Squadron converted to Liberator heavy bombers towards the end of 1944 and in March 1945 bombed Japanese barges on Sumbawa Island in the Netherlands East Indies. The unit conducted a successful search for a torpedoed merchant ship and continued to attack enemy barges and airstrips across Java. In June the squadron moved to Tarakan for the remainder of the war.

After the end of the war, 25 Squadron moved to Cunderin in Western Australia and began transporting Australian ex-prisoners of war and internees from Borneo and Morotai. The unit was disbanded on 9 July 1946.

    WEDDING
    WIIITTAKER? BERTHELSEN
A very quiet and pretty wedding was solemnised on Saturday, July 25, at Scarness Presbyterian Church when Mary Shirley (Meg), only daughter of the late Mr. and Mr. Mrs. C.A. Berthelsen, Scarness, was married to Wilfred Roy, son of Mr. G. H. Whittaker and ihe late Mrs. Whittaker, Maryborough.
The bride was given away by her cousin, Mr. Stewart Hansen.

The church was artistically decorated with fairy-like poppies, poinsetta and roses by the friends of the bride.
Rev. D. F. Roberts officiated at the ceremony. Prior to the
wedding ceremony "O Perfect Love" was rendered. Mrs. D.
    L. Roberts, organist, played "The Voice That Breathed O'er
Eden," the "Wedding March", and the "Bridal Chorus."

The bride looked radiant in a frock of powder blue moss crepe, self-embroidery on shoulders and sleeves, flared
pleated skirt, softly shirred bodice, self-covered buttons
down the front of the bodice. She also wore a string of pearls and carried a Bible with a spray of Eucharis lilies.

The bridesmaid. Miss Merle Ward, was dainty in a frock of
blue everglaze shot with gold, made with a full tucked and
gathered skirt, tight-fitting bodice with a mandarin collar.
She carried a Victorian posy of pink roses and sweet peas.
Mr. Eric Whittaker. brother of the groom, was best man.

On leaving the church, the Sunday School scholars formed a guard of honour. Meg had been the founder of the Sunday School. The reception was held st the residence of the
bridegroom's sister, Mrs. Knobbs. The beautifully decoratod wedding cake was made by Mrs. Knobbs. Only immediate relatives were present. The honeymoon is being spent in Sydney.
